10 Things I have Learned From Working in a Restaurant
Here is just a list of things I have learned while working at a restaurant for the past 2 years. Some of them are obvious, some of them disgusting, and some of them…well..you will see.
1. What the guest does not know, will not hurt them.
2. ALWAYS check the glass you select for your table’s drinking preference.
3. NEVER send a food item back to be recooked, especially if the restaurant is busy.
4. Become friends with your managers. It helps.
5. Always do things without your uppers having to tell you, so when they yell at you to do something, you can say ‘ok’, and then go and do more nothing.
6. Tell your table about it NOW, before they see it on the check.
7. Learn Spanish.
8. Whatever the guest likes, you like too. NEVER say ‘I don’t like that’. Instead say ‘That’s a great dish, one of our most popular, but if you’re really looking for something tasty you should try my personal favorite _______.’ It really helps.
9. Your personal favorite should always be the most expensive thing on the menu, or the food item your managers want you to push.
10. Make friends with the guy with the credit card. I know this is terrible but I tend to take care of the assumed payer a bit better than the rest of his/her party.
